5.          Impact of "Two Traditional Economic Influences" on Western World's penchant for Economic Materialism

Laissez-faire is French for "let it be" ie. "free-market" - a doctrine that maintains that private initiative and production are best allowed to roam free, opposing economic interventionism by government beyond that which is perceived to be necessary to maintain individual liberty.

The Bill of Rights comprises the first ten amendments to the American Constitution adopted almost 200 years ago, which ostensibly ensure the rights of its citizens and limiting the power of government.  The Fourteenth Amendment of 1868 stated, in part, that:

No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.

The standard of living in the USA, particularly since WW2, has advanced at an unprecedented rate partially due to American's preoccupation with the individual's right to do what the individual wants which has facilitated enterprise and innovation. 

"All Men are created equal, that they are endowed by their creator, with certain unalienable rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness."

However, a cost of this increase in Economic Materialism is that though accounting for only 5 percent of the world's population, Americans consume 26 percent of the world's energy (American Almanac) In view of global economic prosperity and the Western penchant for excessive credit, the blueprint of energy consumption which the world's most powerful nation has promulgated is likely to multiply in the short term due to Eastern Europe, Asia and Oceania similarly seeking greater Economic Materialism

The two major parties in the U.S. are the Republican Party and the Democrats Party.  The familiar mantra promulgated by Republican Shock Jocks which is by supported by most of America, with the likely exception of San Francisco, is "we stand for LESS GOVERNMENT, whereas Democrats want MORE GOVERNMENT". 

Prima facie most would agree with the Shock Jocks.  However, Section 6 explains the 5th Guidance Influence is a primary reason for the Seven Problems, and Section 7 asserts that Government should invoke its rights under the Traditional Role of Government to provide a 6th Guidance Influence which doesn't hinder either of the Two Traditional Economic Influences, but seeks to offset adverse Effects of the 5th Guidance Influence.

Patently the above Two Traditional Economic Influences, namely "let free market forces prevail" and "citizens rights" have contributed to an increased standard of living across the Western World which is largely due to Economic Materialism.  But at a GHG cost which is forecast to skyrocket as other nations seek to emulate the U.S.'s towering materialistic lifestyle which can extend to material decadence.

Problems due to a penchant to acquire possessions and consume are not new.  Buddhism cites the 10,000 joys and 10,000 sorrows of life.  Buddhism's "Second Noble Truth" is 'inter alia' that suffering is caused by "craving what we want" and rather than constantly struggling to get what you want, modify your wanting because it deprives you of contentment and happiness.  Siddhartha Gotama's (known as the Buddha) contentment ethos five hundred years before Christ is becoming popular in western countries.  Buddhism has answers to problems in modern materialistic societies because of its extensive understanding of natural therapies to arrest anxiety and depression which some psychologists consider effective therapy.
